Can you actually believe it’s New Years Eve?! 2017 feels like it passed by in a blur for us, and I’m excited for what the new year has to bring already. 2017 was the happiest year of our lives, and undoubtedly the most stressful year of our lives. Good always trumps the bad, so I hope we will always look back on the year with happy memories, and forget the stress and chaos that we’ve gone through. Today is a good day for reflecting on the past 12 months, and making resolutions (that I probably won’t keep) for 2018.
2017 was the year of…
The arrival of our wild, funny, smart little man last February was the highlight of our year (and the highlight of our lives). Funnily enough, he threatened to arrive last New Years Day, but hung on for 8 more weeks, arriving in drama and style on February 21st (read all about it here). We’ve been on the parenting rollercoaster ever since, and are constantly trying to figure it out. Our wee man finishes out the year standing, showing off his wobbly walk while holding onto the couch/table/dogs tail, and saying “dada” over and over and over (I’m not bitter, swear!). He’s our walking, talking, miracle baby and the greatest thing to come out of 2017.
We made the “big move” home to Ireland this past September (read about it here). The move took months and months of planning, and has been the most stressful thing we’ve ever done. Moving house is always a nightmare, but moving continents with a new baby, a dog and a cat, was pure chaos. We’re thrilled to be home now, and love being so close to our family and friends. In reflection though, we do concede that we were a bit mad to make the move when we did, but we all emerged unscathed.
Having a baby shifts everything – the way you view the world, how you spend your time and your priorities. Free time is more rare, and more precious than it was before Jack arrived. Nights out (and days out) require forward planning, and sometimes military efforts. I made the decision in October to stay at home with Jack, as I hated being away from him while I worked. So far, I’m realising that this is the hardest job I’ll ever have, and that my new tiny boss has me on call 24/7, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
We’re lucky to have done plenty of traveling in 2017, baby in tow for most of it! Jack’s first holiday at 3 months old was to Orlando, Florida, and we’ve done a few trips around Ireland. Our highlights were our trip to the Aran Islands, and a trip to the Dingle peninsula in November. Colm and I managed a couple of baby-free trips too, to Farnham Estate, Washington DC and Dublin (thanks Nanna’s!). We’ve also been making an effort to get out and about locally as a family, and see what Meath has to offer.
THE TULLY TALES
I took a step into the unknown last May, and started this blog. Initially, I thought it would be a place for me to ramble on about parenting, how little sleep I was getting, and post cute pictures of Jack. It’s turned out to be all of that and so much more, and I am so grateful for all of the support, feedback and advice I’ve received. Blogging is a hobby, and I love it, but it’s also a great community of readers and bloggers. I’ve made lots of new friends this past year through my little blog, and I’m looking forward to continuing to share this adventure in 2018.
So there you have it – 2017 in a nutshell was amazing. We’re settling in at home, we’re healthy and we have our gorgeous little boy. I’d love to hear what your 2017 highlights are, and what you’re looking forward to in 2018!
